Pylon Miticide-Insecticide Concentrate 16 oz | 21.4% Chlorfenapyr Greenhouse Pest Control

Pylon Miticide-Insecticide – 21.4% Chlorfenapyr

Pylon Miticide-Insecticide is a professional miticide and insecticide containing 21.4% chlorfenapyr, formulated for pest management on specified ornamental crops and fruiting vegetable crops grown in commercial greenhouses.

Pylon provides broad-spectrum control of important greenhouse pests, including mites, thrips, caterpillars, fungus gnats and other labeled insect and mite pests. Its unique Group 13 chemistry works by interfering with energy production in susceptible insects and mites. BASF describes Pylon as providing excellent translaminar activity and mortality of most target pests within 72 hours.

The 16 fl. oz. concentrate is designed for professional greenhouse pest-management programs where chlorfenapyr is an appropriate and labeled treatment.

Pests Controlled

Pylon is labeled for control of numerous greenhouse insect and mite pests, including:

  • Broad mites
  • Caterpillars
  • Citrus bud mites
  • Chilli thrips
  • Cyclamen mites
  • Foliar nematodes
  • Fungus gnats
  • Rust mites
  • Spider mites
  • Western flower thrips

See the current EPA-approved label for the complete pest list and crop-specific use directions.

Excellent Greenhouse Mite Control

Pylon is particularly valuable for professional greenhouse pest-management programs targeting difficult mite populations.

BASF identifies Pylon as providing broad-spectrum control of nymph and adult stages of mites, including spider mites and several other labeled mite species.

Pylon is not ovicidal, so when moderate to high populations of eggs are present, BASF recommends rotating Pylon with a registered ovicidal product appropriate for the pest.

Thrips Control

Pylon provides control of important greenhouse thrips, including:

  • Western flower thrips
  • Chilli thrips

Its translaminar activity makes it a useful tool in greenhouse pest-management programs where thorough contact coverage can be difficult to achieve.

How Pylon Works

Pylon contains chlorfenapyr, a Group 13 insecticide.

Chlorfenapyr interferes with energy production in susceptible insects and mites. BASF describes its mode of action as disrupting the production of usable cellular energy, ultimately resulting in pest mortality.

Pylon also provides translaminar movement, allowing the active ingredient to move through treated leaf tissue.

Greenhouse Uses

The EPA label specifies Pylon for use on:

  • Ornamental crops grown in commercial greenhouses
  • Fruiting vegetable crops grown in commercial greenhouses

Pylon is not a general-purpose residential landscape insecticide.

The current EPA label specifically states that it is for use only on ornamental crops and fruiting vegetable crops grown in commercial greenhouses.

Ornamental Crop Applications

Pylon can be used on specified ornamental crops grown in commercial greenhouses.

Potential pest targets include:

  • Spider mites
  • Broad mites
  • Cyclamen mites
  • Rust mites
  • Thrips
  • Caterpillars
  • Fungus gnats
  • Other labeled pests

Always verify that the specific ornamental crop and target pest are included on the current label before application.

Fruiting Vegetable Applications

Pylon is also labeled for specified fruiting vegetable crops grown in commercial greenhouses.

The EPA label and applicable supplemental labels should be consulted for the specific crop, pest, application rate, maximum number of applications and other restrictions.

Application Information

Pylon is applied as a diluted spray using properly calibrated greenhouse spray equipment.

The current product information lists application rates ranging from approximately 2.6 to 5.2 fl. oz. per 100 gallons of water, depending on the crop and target pest.

Do not use this range as a universal application rate.

The exact rate depends on:

  • Crop
  • Target pest
  • Pest population
  • Application method
  • Crop stage
  • Greenhouse conditions
  • Applicable state restrictions

Always follow the current EPA-approved label for the exact application rate and directions.

Application Timing

BASF recommends making applications in the coolest times of the day and taking precautions to minimize the potential for crop injury. Applications should be made prior to blooming or blooms should be avoided whenever possible.

Pylon may provide approximately 14–21 days of control, depending on the target pest and population pressure.

For high pest populations where multiple generations are present, BASF states that a high-rate Pylon application may be followed by one sequential application 5–7 days later when necessary, subject to the product label.

Resistance Management

Pylon belongs to IRAC Group 13.

To help manage the development of resistant insect and mite populations:

  • Do not repeatedly rely on Group 13 chemistry.
  • Rotate Pylon with products having different modes of action.
  • Follow the label's restrictions on sequential applications.
  • Target immature pest stages when appropriate.
  • Use integrated pest-management practices.
  • Monitor pest populations before and after treatment.

A proper resistance-management program is particularly important in greenhouse production because repeated pesticide use can place significant selection pressure on pest populations.
